Founded in 2016, The Sekine Quartet was formed by former students of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and has since established a reputation for versatile and engaging performances across the Midlands and beyond.

The quartet performs regularly for Fever's Candlelight Concert series, appearing in some of the region's most atmospheric venues, including Birmingham Cathedral, St. Paul's Church, and Coventry Cathedral. Their performances span a wide range of repertoire, from classical masterworks to contemporary arrangements, bringing live music to audiences in unique and memorable settings.

Combining a wealth of professional experience with a shared passion for performance, the quartet brings energy, artistry, and flexibility to every event.

Meet the members

Risa Michelle Sekine

Risa Michelle Sekine

Risa Michelle Sekine is a London based violinist who enjoys a varied schedule of orchestral, chamber, and solo playing. She graduated with a First Class with Honours degree from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2020, having studied on a full scholarship under the tutelage of Nathaniel Vallois and Oliver Wille. Soon after completing her Master of Music degree at the Royal College of Music in London in 2022, she quickly kickstarted a busy freelance career playing with the City of Birmingham Symphony as a Career Accelerator Fellow, as well as the Welsh National Opera, Royal Ballet Sinfonia and Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

She also enjoys a variety of concerts as the First Violinist and founding member of The Sekine Quartet who regularly perform at different venues across Birmingham.

Anna Emslie

Anna, originally from Nantwich (UK), is a freelance violinist and is a passionate musicianship educator in London and Birmingham. Anna is currently studying her Masters at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire having previously received a first class honours degree from City, University of London. In London, Anna dedicated a lot of her time to world music ensembles. One of her favourite highlights was playing in Montreux Jazz Festival aswell as being part of The Benedetti Foundation Orchestra. She has a lot of fun playing with chamber groups that focus on all styles of music away from classical and loves to arrange all styles of music, especially for people's special day.

Paola Cadarelli

Paola Cardarelli

Originally from Milan (Italy), Paola is a violinist in her final year of MMus at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. She graduated with the highest mark form Conservatorio "G.Verdi" in Milan. She loves playing in orchestra and has performed with renowned conductors, such as Michael Seal, Ottavio Dantone, Corrado Rovaris and Jaume Santonja.

Paola enjoys as well playing in smaller ensembles, such as the Sekine Quartet.

She is a very versatile musician and looks forward to make your day a special one with her music.

Flora McNicoll

Flora McNicoll

Flora was born in London and started learning the cello at the age of eight, and has since received invaluable musical training during her studies at the Royal Academy of Music junior department (2011-2016). Flora graduated in 2020 with BMus(Hons) after studying with Matthew Sharp at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. During her undergraduate studies she earnt a place on both the CBSO and Birmingham Royal Ballet side-by-side schemes, playing in notable symphonies and ballets with the two renowned orchestras under top conductors such as Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Christian Macelaru. She followed this by studying postgraduate performance under the tutelage of Eduardo Vassallo. During her studies, Flora has won places studying with renowned orchestras, performing in masterclasses with renowned cellists, and most recently has been awarded 1st Prize in the RBC Strings Competition (2021).

In her orchestral career, most recently Flora has played with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Manchester Concert Orchestra.
